TV and Film streaming

Posted in Internet with tags on May 22, 2008 by micktay

I just thought It may be useful to put a link up. This is the website I am currently using, it links to services like 56.com, tudou.com and loads of other chinese streaming sites.

SurfTheChannel.com

It usually has films up as soon as or even before they come out, and has thousands of TV shows available.

RSS feeds from various sources

Posted in Web Design with tags on May 21, 2008 by micktay

I really like RSS, however I didn’t want to use a stand-alone RSS reader, or even goto the trouble of subscribing to certain feeds using Firefox, to be honest I’ve not even looked into this. Adding the feeds directly into my blog seemed an ideal solution.

I’ve just set up a tumblr account and whilst setting it up I added a few feeds from my other blogs and also a feed to my YouTube videos. I’d done this before, specifically on this page, as you can see to the right. However I wanted to display my favourites from my YouTube account alongside the videos I had posted. I thought that YouTube would have a feed for this already however this was not the case.

After googling I found a few sites that host a PHP application that utilises YouTubes API. I used the first one that I came across however I’m sure the others work in a similar way. Here is a link to the site I’m using at the moment.

It was quite simple to use.

This Blog has no direction

Posted in Random on January 9, 2008 by micktay

I have realised looking back through the limited number of posts contained in this blog, they are almost random posts, no consistency or coherence to them.

In short this blog is pretty useless.

Anyone coming to view this blog would leave with no real enhancement to their lives. I was about to scrap it however, I remembered what interested me in creating this blog in the first place.

It wasn’t to create interesting content, available to the masses, to get 1 million views before lunchtime and become an internet sensation.

I started this account purely to have a play about, to throw some layout and design ideas at wordpress to see what worked and what didn’t. The posts came merely as a secondary thought, some content to pad out the site, just so I would be able to visualise what my design would look like when applied to a REAL blog. I may as well have posted…

Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in
voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non
proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.

In short this was a failed exercise, I did not know that wordpress.com didn’t allow you to upload your own themes (or if they do I haven’t found the function). The most I have been able to customise is by adding my own header to a pre-made template created by some wordpress guru that has gotten their theme approved.

It has allowed me a glimpse albiet an abridged version of the true wonders of a full wordpress installation on a dedicated server. WordPress as a CMS definately deserves its reputation as one of the ‘top dogs’ in the field.

I’m going to keep this blog.

Although I may not post often and the posts may not be relevant to anyone in particular. I really like having all of my different accounts (del.icio.us, youtube, myspace) kind of neatly presented in one place.

Chimpanzee Research In Kyoto – Interesting result

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on December 5, 2007 by micktay

Heard about this on channel 4 news during a break in work. The speed in which they solve the number puzzles is astounding. Apparently a test group of 20 chimpanzees’ scored 80% overall, with a group of ‘human’ students scoring around the 40% mark

Nooooo…. My computer has died…..

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on December 4, 2007 by micktay

Yes after 7 yrs my motherboard has finally given up.

(Thats right, 7 YRS!)

This of course means that even though I upgraded most of the components last year I will now have to scrap almost all of the parts in order to rebuild.

I am now contemplating what to do with myself, I’m currently using a borrowed laptop at the moment, however it’s just not the same.

  • All my programs are missing. (Photoshop,3DS Max, Flash, SoundForge, EVEN Counterstrike *weeps*)
  • The ’stuff’ that I didn’t copy over to my new FreeAgentPro(500gb) External Hard Drive (which looks damn sweet IMHO) is still languishing in the useless case that I used to call a computer.
  • I cannot use this laptop ‘willy-nilly’ whenever the inspiration grabs me.(as it is not my own)
  • I’m not even allowed to play around with any of the settings
  • It’s awfully slow….

In short I need to get me something new, on the positive side, I have enjoyed the freedom of the laptop. I am currently sat downstairs, able watching T.V. as I type, the proximity of the kitchen is also a bonus.

A laptop is looking like the best solution to my current problems, what to go for though.

CounterStrike 1.6 Gun Game

Posted in CounterStrike 1.6 on February 23, 2007 by micktay

Started seeing more and more servers utilising this mod, I’ve never seen it before this month. You basically have to work your way up through a list of guns, each requiring a certain amount of kills (dependent on the server) most times the last two weapons are the HE grenade and then the Knife, once a player reaches the HE grenade then friendly fire is turned on…

Counter Strike

It’s a really good mod once you get used to it, after every kill you get an auto reload minus a few bullets so kills in quick succession are easily made. It really increases your ability to use a wide range of weapons too, for example if you are in a match and you’ve gone “eco” then you pick up a shotgun or a sub-machine gun then you are more likely to be able to use the weapon effectively as at least you’ve had a little practice aiming with it.

GunGame mod is a natural extension to the Death-Match servers… Go on them if you ever see it in the server list.

Although I have designed many websites and pages over the years (and received some fairly nice rewards for the trouble) This site was really the first that required me to meet with a client discuss the needs of the site and really get to grips with the whole design process, It’s also the first time I have charged money for my services rather than the usual “get us a few beers in when you can” kind of payment. I was pleased with the whole project, as more importantly was the client.

If you would like to view the site then follow this… www.careafloat.com

As I say I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. It gave me a chance to put the CSS knowledge that I have been aquiring over the past year to some use, also highlighting any pitfalls that could occur during other projects.
